KAMPALA, Uganda — In a major move to solidify its position as a top travel hub in Africa, the Ugandan government has officially announced visa-free entry for citizens of 40 countries and territories.
The announcement, made by the Ministry of Internal Affairs on March 11, 2026, represents one of the most significant shifts in the country’s immigration policy. By removing bureaucratic hurdles, Uganda aims to stimulate its tourism sector—historically a primary foreign exchange earner—and foster deeper economic ties across the continent and beyond.
Key Highlights of the Policy
The new directive simplifies entry for millions of potential visitors, particularly from African neighbors and strategic global partners.
-
Regional Integration: All members of the East African Community (EAC), including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Burundi, are confirmed on the list.
-
Broad African Reach: A total of 21 African nations are now exempt, including Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, and Seychelles.
-
Global Connectivity: The exemption extends to 19 countries and territories outside Africa, notably high-value hubs like the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.
-
Special Provisions: In a progressive humanitarian step, the government confirmed that refugees or stateless persons holding Conventional Travel Documents (CTDs) from these 40 nations may also enter without a visa.

“Visa-Free” Does Not Mean “Condition-Free”
While the need for a prior visa application has been scrapped, Simon Mundeyi, spokesperson for the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control, reminded travelers that standard security and health protocols remain in place.
To enter the “Pearl of Africa,” travelers must still present:
-
A valid passport (with at least six months of remaining validity).
-
Proof of onward or return travel.
-
Confirmation of accommodation (e.g., hotel booking).
-
Required health certificates, such as Yellow Fever vaccination.
Strategic Economic Impact
The timing of the policy coincides with a broader regional trend toward a “borderless Africa.” This move aligns with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), designed to encourage the free movement of labor, services, and capital. By including global financial centers like Singapore and the UAE, Uganda is signaling a clear intent to attract not just tourists, but high-value business investors.
Notably, major Western powers such as the United States, United Kingdom, and most EU member states remain subject to standard visa requirements, underscoring Uganda’s strategic pivot toward regional and South-South cooperation.
We at Uganda Car Rental Services strongly support this move as it will boost Uganda tourism and trade hence more revenue.
