A Playful, Affordable Primate Adventure in the Virunga Volcanoes
High in the bamboo forests of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, troops of golden monkeys — bright orange-gold fur flashing against green bamboo — leap, chase, and tumble through the canopy in one of Uganda’s most energetic wildlife encounters. It’s fast, playful, and refreshingly affordable, making it one of the best-value activities you can add to a Uganda safari.

Why Track Golden Monkeys
![]()
- A different kind of primate encounter. Where gorilla trekking is quiet and intimate, golden monkey troops are loud, fast, and constantly in motion — a completely different rhythm of wildlife watching.
- Exceptional value. At a fraction of the cost of a gorilla permit, it’s one of the easiest high-impact additions to any southwestern Uganda itinerary.
- High success rate. Golden monkey troops move in large groups of 20 to 80+ individuals, making them far easier to locate than more solitary or sparsely distributed species.
- Pairs naturally with gorilla trekking. Mgahinga sits just 2–3 hours from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, so both experiences fit easily into the same trip.
- Rarely sold out. Unlike gorilla permits, which can require months of advance booking, golden monkey permits are almost always available — even on short notice.
What to Expect on the Day
Morning briefing. Your day begins around 8:00am at the Ntebeko Visitor Center with a safety and etiquette briefing from your guide.
Into the bamboo. Groups of up to eight trekkers, accompanied by an experienced park guide and an armed ranger, head into montane forest and bamboo zones in search of a habituated troop. Expect moderate hiking, occasional mud, and a real workout at altitudes between 2,200 and 4,500 meters.
The encounter. Once the troop is located, you’ll spend one hour (or up to four, with the habituation option) watching golden monkeys feed on bamboo shoots, groom one another, and chase through the branches overhead. Bring a camera with a fast shutter — these primates rarely sit still.
Back to base. The return hike typically brings the full outing to two to five hours, after which you’ll receive a certificate marking your trek.
Two Ways to Experience It
Standard Tracking — the classic one-hour encounter, ideal for travelers combining golden monkeys with a broader Uganda itinerary.
Habituation Experience — a deeper, half-day option that puts you alongside trackers and researchers working with a semi-habituated troop, extending your time with the monkeys to roughly four hours. A strong choice for photographers, primatologists, and anyone who wants more than a quick hour in the forest.
Best Time to Go
![]()
Golden monkey tracking runs year-round, but timing shapes the experience:
- June–September & December–February (dry seasons): Firmer trails, better visibility, and the best photography light. This is also peak season, so book a few weeks ahead.
- March–May & October–November (rainy seasons): Lush, vivid scenery and noticeably fewer visitors, though trails are muddier and the thicker bamboo growth can make spotting monkeys slightly harder.
Pack warm layers regardless of season — Mgahinga’s altitude keeps temperatures cool, even during a downpour.
Combine It With
Golden monkey tracking rarely stands alone on an itinerary. Popular pairings include:

- Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi — 2–3 hours from Mgahinga, and the natural centerpiece of most southwestern Uganda safaris
- Volcano Hiking on Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, or Mount Sabyinyo, all accessible from within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
- Batwa Cultural Experience — a guided visit with the indigenous Batwa community, sharing their history and traditional forest knowledge
- Birding — Mgahinga hosts a strong showing of Albertine Rift endemic species
Getting There

- By road: Roughly 8–10 hours from Kampala/Entebbe via Masaka, Mbarara, and Kisoro.
- By air: A short domestic flight to Kisoro Airstrip, followed by a brief road transfer.
- Via Kigali, Rwanda: For travelers flying into Rwanda, Mgahinga is reachable in as little as 2–3 hours by road using the East Africa Tourist Visa — a convenient option if your international flight lands in Kigali rather than Entebbe.
